The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Song

The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series from Critical Role, unveiled a new opening credits. It features our favorite group of outcasts, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and making their mark, while teasing at several heart-wrenching backstories for key figures including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.

All in all, the opening looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the music selection.

This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song composed by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one released by the production company's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.

The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its tone is a little off.

Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the series will have some changes and differences from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its intro seems to be among these.

The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to get to know the personas of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
