The Hit Drama Announced for Seventh Series on the British Broadcaster

Line of Duty cast members
Martin Compston are set to reprise their characters in the acclaimed police drama

The beloved crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th installment, confirmed by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode series created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the network.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."

The previous series wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that attracted over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only arrived recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

The seventh season will open with AC-12 having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by production details.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to tackle misconduct within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to act as a sexual predator.

However, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, the teaser hinted.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had so many fans watch the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new season."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in the UK is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor described appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

Vicky McClure remarked: "It goes without saying I'm very happy the show is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor commented: "As we count down the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming soon."

"Pleased with the news and anticipating those mercurial plot developments."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty launched in 2012 and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

The BBC has not yet announced when the new season will premiere.

The finale of season six brought the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.

However, the corporation announced on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
