Iranian forces say they have struck a US naval base in Bahrain, as Iran launched missile attacks throughout the Middle East in response for a large-scale and continuing assault targeting the nation by the US and Israel.

Huge plumes of black smoke were seen rising from an vicinity in the area of the command center of the US Navy's Fifth Fleet in Manama, Bahrain. The full scale of any damage is not yet known and the United States has yet to issue a statement.

Regional Interceptions

In other parts of the Middle East, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and the State of Kuwait - all home to US military bases - reported they have shot down missiles in their airspace.

In Doha, Qatar's defence ministry announced it had intercepted a number of projectiles seemingly aimed at the al-Udeid air base, the biggest US military installation in the region.

Operation "Truthful Promise 4"

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard declared it was attacking American facilities and interests as part of military campaign "Truthful Promise 4", in reprisal for the offensive on Iran initiated by the United States and its ally Israel on Saturday morning.

That US-Israeli operation - initiated at around 06:15 GMT - has so far targeted areas associated with the Iranian leadership, with US President Donald Trump encouraging the Iranian people to revolt against the government.

In Israel, air raid sirens sounded nationwide after the Israeli military stated it had detected an barrage of missiles from Iran.

The Ministry of Defence of the United Arab Emirates said in a statement that the nation has been targeted by a "a blatant attack involving Iranian ballistic missiles".

"UAE air defence systems engaged the missiles with great effectiveness and shot down a several projectiles," the statement continued.

The statement noted wreckage fell on a residential area in the capital, resulting in some structural damage and the death of one civilian.

The US Air Force is stationed at the Al Dhafra base, to the south of the Emirati capital, along with the UAE Air Force.
